TOMAT – AFASI

Afasi, the new Tomat solo album,  is OUT TODAY via The State51 Conspiracy.

Afasi is a collection of fragments, pieces of songs, words, voices samples, rhythms, loops, melodies, and contrasting emotions woven together over time.

In the last years I’ve been gathering samples , sounds, recordings, and loops on my laptop, creating a sort of corrupted archive of memories and emotions. I played with whatever I had at hand, softwares or hardwares , whenever I could find the time, in the studio, at home, on the road, at day, or late at night. I recorded everything on the fly, then revisited it when I had the chance to shape it further. Carving out fragments of time whenever possible, I realized that this project was my unconscious attempt to respond to a feeling of disorientation and fragmentation.

Each track represents a personal emotional state, which I tried to keep as true as possible to the original spark that inspired it. For all the titles, I chose words that have transformed over time through linguistic shifts like metathesis and metaplasm, changing shape and meaning along the way. As the tracks took shape, I got a strong feeling of evanescence, of blurriness, of disintegration.

Through this project, I tried to express these feelings, leading me to reflect on the very concept of the word Afasi. The name itself is an interpretive metathesis blending the Greek term ἄφασία (aphasia) and the Italian phrase “a fasi” (meaning “in phases” or “in stages”). This combination for me reflects the growing fragmentation of our world and our ability to feel, understand, process, remember, and communicate.
